Mississauga city officials are moving forward with a public awareness campaign encouraging residents to raise the Canadian flag as a shared symbol of national pride, while continuing to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity. The initiative follows a motion recently approved by the council that focuses on education and community engagement rather than regulation.

The campaign is intended to coincide with National Flag of Canada Day on February 15, with city staff directed to promote awareness and provide information around respectful flag display. Officials say the message is designed to highlight unity and civic pride, particularly in a community known for its multicultural population.

City representatives have emphasized that participation is completely voluntary. The municipality has no authority over how flags are displayed on private property, and the initiative is not tied to enforcement or new bylaws. Instead, the goal is to invite residents to consider flying the Maple Leaf alongside other flags as a symbolic gesture of shared identity.

Deputy Mayor John Kovac said the idea originated from conversations with residents who wanted to demonstrate greater pride in Canada while still acknowledging their cultural heritage. He has stressed that the campaign should not make anyone feel pressured or singled out, describing it as an inclusive effort centered on choice and respect.

Kovac, whose family background reflects the immigrant experience shared by many in the city, said the Canadian flag represents belonging for people from all communities. The initiative, he explained, aims to reinforce a sense of connection among residents while acknowledging Mississauga’s diverse character.

The campaign arrives as communities across the country prepare to mark the anniversary of the Canadian flag’s adoption in 1965. City leaders say they hope the initiative will encourage conversations about unity and identity while giving residents the freedom to express their pride in ways that feel meaningful to them.
