Metabolic syndrome in Canadian adults, 2007 to 2019

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of multiple risk factors, including abdominal obesity (or high waist circumference), elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high fasting blood glucose, and high blood pressure. MetS is an important contributor to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Research indicates that MetS doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases the risk of diabetes fivefold. Using the most recent nationally representative data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study provides an updated prevalence of MetS and its components among Canadian adults aged 18 to 79 years by age group and sex.
